Hey all, it was great to see so many familiar faces back at the Stomp it Off! Swing Dance this past Saturday along with the new faces. What a great start we had! With that in mind, we’re following things up with a fantastic night of swinging jazz music this coming Saturday with DJ’s Matt and Angie, our very own Wonder Twins. These two each have great taste in swinging jazz and a solid understanding of what Balboa, Charleston, and Lindy Hop dancers want. Expect a solid night of music this Saturday at the Stomp it Off! Swing Dance with Matt and Angie on the decks.
Speaking of great music, we’ve got a special night of killer live music on Saturday September 24th. New Stuff!
There’s a new dance night in town. It will mosey on in as of Thursday September 22nd and it’s presented by Rhythm City! The dance will take place at St. Michael’s Church, located at 409 E. Broadway in Vancouver. The as of yet unnamed dance will run from 9pm to midnight. You can help Rhythm City in naming this new event by showing up to Stomp it Off! on Saturday night and filling out a ballot.
Also new from Rhythm City is the Intro to Swing dance lesson series. The series is for anyone who wants to dip their toe into the pool of swing but has been a little intimidated by all the heavy swimming… er… swinging! If that’s you, sign up for Intro to Swing starting Thursday September 22nd by contacting Rhythm City Productions. Hmmm. September 22nd for the start of Vancouver’s newest dance lesson series and dance event. A coincidence? I think not!
Boy, is it coming quick. The Stomp it Off! Swing Dance will be back up and running this Saturday night with DJ Hussy getting your Lindy butts on the dances floor. We’re at our usual time and place with the doors opening at 7:30pm at the Grandview Legion Auditorium, 2205 Commercial Drive, and the Drop-In Survival Tactics Swing Dance Lesson getting under way at 8pm. If your new to this Swing Dance thing, definitely take advantage of the Drop-In Dance Lesson to get your Lindy Hop feet under you. If you’re keen, you can also sign up for a beginner Lindy Hop lesson series with Rhythm City Productions. Check them out for the best Swing Dance lessons in Vancouver. There’s even a beginner Lindy Hop lesson series starting September 17th at the Grandview Legion Auditorium before the Stomp it Off! Dance gets going. Contact Rhythm City for more details. (Just a note, Rhythm City classes and the Stomp it Off! Dance are separate events. Lesson Series registration does not get you into the Dance and the Dance cover charge does not get you into a Lesson Series)
Also this month, Stomp it Off! will be hosting the first band night of the fall season on September 24th with The Hoppin’ Mad Orchestra headlining the show! A part of the Rhythm City Mess Around (RCMA 2011) Weekend, Jungle Swing is a proud supporter of this annual event. We’re looking forward to a great weekend of music and dancing. Come out and join us for the best in live swinging Jazz and Lindy Hop that Vancouver has to offer.
Oh yes it does! Jungle Swing’s Stomp it Off! DJ Hussy will be on the decks playing her amazing array of swinging jazz tunes and keeping your feet on the dance floor for hours. Of course, we’ll be back at our old stomping grounds (pun intended) in the Grandview Legion Auditorium located at 2205 Commercial Drive on the corner of Commercial and 6th. Many of you have been out dancing as much as possible around town and around the world, attending Lindy Hop and Balboa events everywhere you can. Some of you will be coming in to try swing dance for the first time. Others still will be looking to build off of what they learned in the past year as newer swing dancers who have yet to take up the challenge of the summer Lindy event season. To all of you, welcome to the fall season of Stomp it Off!
Since Jungle Swing is on hiatus with Stomp it Off! for the summer, and we’re not doing Dancing in the Street, the focus of the blog through July and August will be on the myriad of dance and live music events that go on around Vancouver. Much of what you’ll see ties in with last week’s post regarding spaces and space usage in Vancouver. It’s all about repurposing space in this city as we don’t have larger, dedicated public gathering spaces in the downtown core. So we get creative and use what we have in interesting and unique ways. The events posted here that tie in more directly with the idea of multi-level usage are more of the one-off variety while regular events will be in dedicated venue spaces. Let’s start with the regulars and move on to the unique!
The Usual Suspects
This is all about the regulars. The usual events that happen every week throughout the summer in Vancouver. Many of them are outside to take advantage of the good weather. All of them are fun! I’ll be including non-Swing events in this as well as I am noticing more and more Swing Dancers are looking for other dance experiences. However, Swing and related dances get top billing.
Showboat – Thursday Nights
The perennial favourite of Swing Dancers around the lower mainland, the Showboat stage signifies summer for many of us. Located at scenic Kits Beach, the Showboat stage is located right above the lap pool at 2300 Cornwall. Over the years the day and time has moved around a bit, but things seem to have gained equilibrium in recent years and the Dancing at Showboat casual dance event now runs on Thursday nights from 7:30pm to 10:00pm. The link takes you to the Facebook group where you can check out updates and weather related cancellations.
Blues in the City – 2nd & 4th Fridays of Each Month
Blues in the City has been running for a number of years now and is arguably the most accessible and beginner friendly Blues Dance night Vancouver has to offer. Haven’t heard of Blues Dancing? Think Tango for Swing Dancers. Blues Dancing is sensual, smooth, rhythmic, and danced to the Blues music people so often love to listen to. This month’s first Blues in the City is this Friday, July 8th from 10:00pm to 3:00am. Look for Blues in the City at Academie Duello located at 412 W Hastings St. near Richards.
Royal City Swing – Friday Nights
If you’re into making the trip out to New Westminster, there’s Royal City Swing every Friday night from 7:30pm to Midnight. Located in the Sapperton Pensioner’s Hall at 318 Keary Street, Royal City Swing is on Fridays for the summer, after which they may switch back to their usual Monday time slot. Stay tuned for more on that! As mentioned, Royal City ends at midnight which gives you time to head over to Blues in the City for your post-Swing Blues Dance!
DanceSport BC at Robson Square – Friday Nights
DanceSport BC will be back at Robson Square on Fridays this summer with the Summer Dance Series from 8:00pm to 11:00pm. Having worked along side the fine people at DanceSport BC last summer with Dancing in the Street, I can tell you that they put on a solid event. Definitely take the time to drop by their Friday night event and get some dancing in. This week their free lesson is Cha Cha and will be taught by Tim and Bernadette Mah.
Sunday Afternoon Salsa at Robson Square
The title says it all. Sunday afternoons Stephen and Jennifer Dancey at SalsaVancovuer.net are offering a free Salsa dance at Robson Square starting at 3:00pm with a drop-in Salsa lesson! On top of that, each week there will be a feature performance at 5:00pm. This week’s entertainment includes the lesson taught by Nina Perez of Bachata Vancouver and a performance by Diego & Daniela of Grupo America. Be ready to keep dancing after the performance!
A La Carte Events
Here are the one-off events for this week. Each week we’ll look at dancing, live music and combined events that are Swing Dancer friendly first and general dancing second. If you know of something that you think I should include in this section, leave a comment and I can add it.
The Hot Foot Five at the Hennessey Lounge – Friday July 8th
This one will be fun and as a result is my feature event under A La Carte for the week! Arnt Arntzen, Bonny Northgraves, Michael Wagler, and Simon Addington will be performing as the Hot Foot Five hot Jazz quintet at the Hennessey Lounge located at 53 W. Broadway (2 blocks west of Main Street). And to make things even better, they will be including guest reed player Evan Arntzen. There’s a $5.00 cover charge for this one and you will be able to dance! Make sure to bring your shoes. The show gets going at 9pm and wraps up at midnight. This looks like a great way to spend a hot Friday evening.
Four Eyes Trio at Goldies Pizza – Wednesday July 6th
While Goldies Pizza doesn’t have room for dancing, it’s a great little space to check out live jazz. It’s intimate and comfortable plus they have great food and beer. Tomorrow, bass player Jen Hodge will be getting her Four Eyes Trio back together for a go around at Goldies while the old piano player for the group, Cat Toren, is in town. Jens Christiansen will be supplying sound on the winds. Goldies is located at 605 West Pender St in Vancouver.
Tamara Rhodes at The Cellar Jazz – Friday July 8th
This is one that was sent to me through Turner Music. Tamara Rhodes is playing at the Cellar on Friday July 8th. She’s got a neat sound and mixes a bit of Jazz, R&B, Soul, and Pop. Take a listen through the above link and see what you think! The Cellar is located at 3611 West Broadway Street and the event is $15.00 per person. Reservations can be made by calling 604-738-1959 or via email at reservations@cellarjazz.com
Rockabilly Roundup 10th Annual “THE BOP!” – Saturday July 9th at the Fairview Pub
Rockabilly Roundup is a popular go-to for a number of Swing Dancers in Vancouver who “cross scenes” and like to get their Rockabilly fix. Their 10th annual THE BOP! will be held at the Fairview Pub, located at 898 West Broadway, this Saturday July 9th. For all you Rockabilly fans, this is a do not miss event. You’ll be entertained by Slim Sandy and the Hillbilly Boogie Boys, the Still Creek Brothers, and The Palomars. There will also be a Burlesque review featuring Lincoln Electra & Calamity Kate. The event runs from 8:00pm to 2:00am and is $15.00 to get in. Enjoy!
Jen Hodge, Paul Doherty, & Dave Taylor at the Pourhouse – Sunday July 10th
A little Gypsy Jazz for a Sunday evening never hurt anyone, especially when it’s at the Pourhouse, located at 162 Water Street in historic Gastown. It’s a beautiful space with top notch food and a superb bartender who knows so much about booze that he will blow your mind. Ask him anything. While you’re listening to great music.
VIVA Vancouver – Granville Street July 8, 9, & 10
Last year it was Rediscover Granville. This year it’s VIVA Vancouver! Whatever the name, it means entertainment downtown on Granville Street for those much needed relaxed evenings and afternoons. The evening of Friday July 8th features a variety of buskers and entertainers all along the sidewalks from Smithe to Hastings.
On Saturday July 9th from Noon to 6:00pm on the stretch of Granville between Smithe and Robson, Five Hole For Food will be winding up its cross Canada tour to raise money for Canada’s food banks. Come down to Granville on Saturday and enjoy some road hockey as well as mucking about with various local celebrities. You’ll see me at this one as I’m volunteering! On your way there you can enjoy a variety of entertainment all along Granville Street. You can follow Five Hole For Food on Twitter, @FiveHoleForFood,
On Sunday July 10th, it’s Hip Hop and Breakdance from Robson to Georgia. Again, there will be all sorts of entertainment all along the street. For all of these events there are chairs and tables for great views of the entertainment and to give the city a patio feel. Get out and enjoy what your city has to offer!
As you may know by now, Jungle Swing’s Stomp it Off! Dance is on summer break from July through to the first week in September. We’ll be back on September 10th to get you back on the wonderfully sprung dance floor that the Grandview Legion has to offer. Our first band night will be the 24th of September with the Hoppin’ Mad Orchestra hitting the stage for your Lindy pleasure and in conjunction with the Rhythm City Mess Around. September will be a grand start to the fall Swing dance season at Stomp it Off!
Dancing and Music
In the mean time, there are all sorts of events happening in Vancouver that Swing dancers can attend and enjoy. Heck, even non-dancers can take them in and get full entertainment value! For example, tonight, June 29th, The Jen Hodge All Stars are playing at Guilt & Co, located at 1 Alexander Street in Vancouver. Jen Hodge, hot off her big stage performance with the Company B Jazz Band for the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, will be taking her happy fun Jazz vibe to the stage with her All Stars. I believe 9pm is their start time, but get there early as it’s a Jazz Fest event and it’s likely to be crowded!
Thursdays during the summer the Showboat stage will be running from 7:30pm to 10:00pm, weather permitting of course! This summertime favourite is always well attended and is outdoors on the water with a cool atmosphere and relaxed vibe. It’s a great way to get some dancing in during the summer, so check it out!
For those that feel the need for Blues dancing and its spinoffs, there’s two events to look for in Vancouver. First is Blues in the City run by the incomparable Adam Konkle. Affectionately known as BitC, this well known Vancouver Blues Dance event runs every second and fourth Friday of the month at Academie Duello located at 412 W Hastings. It’s a can’t miss for you Blues lovers out there. Second is Blues Cafe, run by Vincent Wong, in Burnaby at Dance Addicts Studio, 4622 Hastings Street. This is what’s known as a Fusion event (not the atomic kind) and is attended by dancers of all stripes.
There will be many Canada Day celebrations with live music that dancers will love. Granville Island always has things on the go for Canada Day. This year they kick it off with the Jen Hodge All Stars and Swing Patrol running back-to-back from Noon until 5-ish at the Ron Basford Park stage. Elsewhere, Dal Richards will be playing at the Vancouver Convention Centre main stage, 10:00am start time, in the Jack Poole Plaza, and then at the Showboat stage starting at 7:00pm. This iconic band leader is still going strong well into his 90′s and is a must see not only as a musician but as a national treasure. Can you believe he’s doing two shows on Canada Day?!
Summer time is also a great time for dance classes. If you’ve ever wanted to take a Swing dance lesson series, give it a shot during the slower summer months! Jungle Swing’s recommendation is Rhythm City Productions. With a wide array of beginner Swing dance classes, you can get yourself ready for the fall season in no time flat! Visit the Rhythm City website for more information and to register for your first Lindy Hop class.
Public Spaces – How Do We Use Them?
This evening I have the privilege of helping the Downtown Vancouver Business Improvement Association and VIVA Vancouver audition busking acts for the street space transformation on Granville Street this summer. As many of you know, Jungle Swing will not be participating directly in VIVA Vancouver transformations this summer as we did last year with Dancing in the Street. However there will be many different events and types of entertainment on the Granville Mall downtown. Of course, all this leads into the topic of how we use public spaces and in what ways we can re-purpose transit corridors in a city like Vancouver, which was built on a grid.
Last night I attended the Spacing Road Show for Spacing Magazine Vancouver launch. Spacing got its start in Toronto and is all about how we use and perceive public spaces in our cities. The Road Show had a great panel of thoughtful Vancouverites and members of City Hall who talked about Vancouver’s public spaces, how we currently use them, how we are moving towards new usage ideas, and how this all ties in with current transportation realities in our urban lifestyle. Currently in Vancouver, many of our public spaces are transitory such as the Sea Wall (which is ranked as Canada’s top public space by Spacing in their first national edition), Granville Mall, and Commercial Drive, rather than destinations unto themselves. These public spaces are transit corridors, whether for fitness or shopping, but the spaces themselves are not generally used for anything other than as a means of moving people. While this is certainly needed and wanted, there is the unique challenge of temporarily re-purposing these transit spaces for event and gathering space when such is needed and wanted.
We of course had fine examples of this re-purposing or layered use of public transit space with the 2010 Winter Olympics when the downtown core was turned into a gathering place for Vancouverites and guests alike. Last summer the DVBIA and the City of Vancouver got together to build off the Olympic successes to create the Rediscover Granville initiative, of which Jungle Swing was a part with Dancing in the Street. Every year the Vancouver International Jazz Festival successfully engages in the layered usage idea, turning Vancouver streets into open air stages. But it doesn’t always go right.
Some of you may recall a bit of hockey induced craziness that happened in the downtown core during what turned into a regular re-purposing for the playoffs. For the most part the re-purpose for the Canucks playoff run was successful with tens of thousands of people enjoying the outdoor viewing and celebrations. It only turned ugly for one game, but that is the part that will stick in the craw of Vancouverites for some time to come. Another re-purposing that didn’t turn out well, but with a much smaller consequence, was the Car Free Days on Commercial Drive. While many people enjoyed the chance to walk up and down the Drive, sit at a mid-street ‘patio’, and take in entertainment without fear of being squashed by oncoming traffic, a number of businesses were adversely affected because their regular clientele found it difficult to drive to and park near the places they wanted to go. This was an interesting unintended result of a transportation space re-purpose as many did not foresee the push back from businesses due to a lack of customers. While on the surface, both of these re-purposing initiatives seemed like a good idea, they both failed and for very different reasons.
With the positives and negatives both squarely in mind, the City of Vancouver, through VIVA Vancouver, is forging ahead with new ways to use the streets of Vancouver and create public destinations with transitory space. From the Pedestrian Weekends on the Granville Mall to the Cambie Village Community Artists Plaza and the Modular Deck just east of Main on East 14th, Vancouver is encouraging people to get out and engage in their spaces, as both destination and transitory. This summer will have a lot to offer in Vancouver with how we use our city and think about ways to layer usage and engage the public in a positive and thoughtful manner.
While you’re deciding where to go and what to do in Vancouver this summer, pick up the latest issue of Spacing at Chapters and think about how we can use the spaces of our city to encourage cultural growth and positive activities. To add one more idea that was rought up in the panel discussion last night, more than 80% of Canada’s population lives in urban settings yet we still have a century old notion of Canadians as pioneers. The sooner we accept our urban lifestyle and engage in solutions to urban problems, the better off we will be with regards to urban planning, transit, and space usage. And to drive home the point of our outdated ideas we hold about ourselves, it was noted that during the last federal election campaign debates, not a single party leader discussed the urban reality of Canada and the role cities play in our lives. Crazy, eh?
And we’re about to lose a friend. For a couple of months anyway. Stomp it Off! is shutting down for the summer and this is your last chance to Swing dance on the sprung dance floor at the Grandview Legion Auditorium. Tonight’s DJ’s are the infamous, and semi retired, Possum Brothers. Leo and Mark are rolling out the shenanigans for a night of great music and the unexpected. It will be entertaining beyond the norm!
As usual, our Drop-In Survival Tactics™ Swing Lesson will get under way at 8pm as a part of your cover charge. From there it’s dancing from 9pm to 1am with the happy fun Jazz music that makes Swing dancing so enjoyable. So come on out and do some Lindy hop, Charleston, and Balboa. See you tonight at the Stomp it Off! Swing Dance.
Attend an awesome dance event this Sunday that will help raise money for two great local charities that provide support for Vancouver’s inner-city children and youth!
Presented in Part by Jungle Swing and The Blues Cafe, this Dancey Ballroom event at 505 Hamilton will include Lindy Hop and Blues, West Coast Swing, and Salsa from 1pm-9pm! You won’t want to miss it
100% of proceeds from this event will be donated to The KidSafe Project Society and Covenant House Vancouver.
This is it, the final Stomp it Off! Swing Dance of the season and it’s happening this Saturday. So what are we doing to make it a special event? Nothing less than reuniting the Possum Brothers for a night of swing music debauchery. You got it! The Possum Brothers, Mark and Leo, will be at the decks and getting into all sorts of mayhem and hooliganism with musical choices from the bizarre to the extreme. Or not. They will be thoroughly entertaining, to be sure! For those of you in the know, this will be a night to be remembered. For those who have never experienced the Possum Brothers, and it is an experience, you need to get out for the final SiO! before the summer break.
Doors – 7:30pm
Drop-in Swing Dance Lesson – 8:00pm
General Mayhem (a.k.a. Dancing) – 9:00pm to 1:00am
Cover Charege – $13.00 regular price, $10.00 for Jungle Swing Members
As mentioned, this is the final Stomp it Off! Swing Dance before the summer break, so get out and get your Lindy Hop on. Or Balboa… whatever turns your crank.
Stomp it Off! will be back in September starting on the 10th. By then, you’ll be itching to get back at it.
Dancing in the Street is Cancelled
Yep, that’s right. We’re not doing Dancing in the Street this summer. The door is open for next year but this year will not go. If anyone has an idea for a street event this summer and wants to take one of the spots that was designated to Dancing in the Street, get in touch with me and I can direct you to the appropriate people.
There’s only two weekends of Stomp it Off! left and this weekend we’ve got a couple of solid DJ’s to make your dance experience a great one. DJ’s Joel and Angie will be hitting the decks. Joel, the hardened veteran, will be in solid with Angie’s fresh ear and style. It’s going to be a great night of swing dancing! If you’re new to it, you can learn a little Lindy survival at our drop in lesson from 8pm – 9pm. As always, Stomp it Off! is Vancouver’s best swing dance.
The usual Stomp it Off! details apply, starting with our location at 2205 Commercial Drive in the Legion Auditorium, right across the street from JJ Bean. Here’s the rest to make your plans easy.
Cost: $13 regular price, $10 for Jungle Swing and affiliate members.
